Tlakaxipehualiztli, a time for Renewal

It never ceases to amaze me how ingenius the Tonalpohualli Calendar system is. Not only did the ancient Tonalpouhke (astronomers & mathematicians who developed and kept the Tonalpohualli) account for the quarter of a day it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun, but they also determined the ideal moment for the beginning of that cycle to be at the time when the Earth is being reborn: the onset of Spring.

Each Veintena, or Twenty Day Month of the Tonalpohualli, was a beautifully astute and harmonious tool for humans not only to understand the cycles of nature, observe the changes to their surroundings but also to reflect those changes. By consciously synchronizing their thoughts, actions and behaviors to the rhythms of nature, they were able to develop and evolve in harmony with nature... a skill we sorely need to re-develop in society today!

Every Veintena, a community celebration and/or ceremony was done to convene the people and observe the cycles of Nature. These ceremonies were filled with activities for community-building, and rituals in which the consciousness of each person was made aware of what was already shifting in the subconscious and unconscious.
On Wed April 1st, we will begin the Veintena Tlakaxipehualiztli, (when the Renewal of the Human takes Place). This is the second Veintena of the year and therefore the ideal time in the cycle of the Earth for us to shed our old skins, so that new growth can flourish in sync with the Earth. This is also the perfect time for us to make a vow or resolution that will encourage that growth.

So we invite you to join us in a ceremony that will be held Wednesday April 1st at 7pm at Kalmekak.  A ritual during this ceremony will involve the concept of shedding skin.  Those of us participating in this ritual will need to reflect on things we want to commit to change/renew about ourselves. These changes can be related to the following:

       1. concepts/ideas/thoughts/perceptions (head)
       2. actions (hands)
       3. behavior (feet)

Depending on what we are committing to change we will wear special clothing during the ceremony.  Clothing will cover parts of our body associated with what we commit to renew/change and should be made out of butcher paper.

Please wear all white Mazehual attire to the ceremony. Feel free to bring flowers for offerings to the Teopantlamanalli or food to share in community afterwards!

If you have any questions, or would like the address for the ceremony, send us a message below! (If you
