![]() A new course begins Sunday June 9th exploring not only the day to day use of Nahuatl but also its poetic, philosophical and ceremonial use. It will also be available via SKYPE. Go to the course page here for more info ![]() From our IG/ desde nuestro Instagram: Amongst the other disciplines, arts & sciences that Temachtiani Akaxe has studied, he has 30 years polishing the craft of drawing & analyzing the semiotics & symbols of the ancestral Mesoamerican Meta-languages. He has developed & taught a class at Mahtinauhkalli where he has been teaching how to interpret, understand and draw the potent symbols of the ancient metalanguages. Because every line, color, placement and element of a symbol affects its meaning and symbolism, he stresses learning the specific process of drawing each symbol, understanding the semiotics behind colors, line-work & elements by studying the codexes, sculptures and the teachings of native elders from the communities in Mexico...

In some parts it may also be known as Ueitozoztli, Uei Tozoztli o Uei Tozoztintli. ![]() Many have been asking us recently how long we've been doing this but the answer depends on the timeline & what entity you are talking about, so here's a quick look: Temachtiani Akaxe Yotzin has been teaching since 1999. In fact, this year will be the 20th year anniversary from when his Maestro, Maestro Arturo Meza Gutierrez, gave him the responsibilty to begin sharing what he knew. He then began sharing all around the world, wherever the knowledge was needed & where different groups, organizations & universities would host lectures & workshops, helping with the development of many groups & kalpullis until he met his duality, Clarissa Gonzalez in Chicago 8 years ago. After they met, she helped him organize & structure all of the complex & diverse work he was doing, helped him utilize the internet both to offer classes to his international students as well as share on social media, the concept of Machtia Toltekatl was born (see inasca.org) and they began building up with the powerful & committed community in Chicago. Then 4 1/2 years ago they took the first step towards their Institute and opened the doors of Mahtinauhkalli, which would become a hub for local community organizers, social workers, youth workers, educators, birthworkers, students & leaders to take classes, courses, attend ceremonies, ground themselves through ancestral knowledge, continue serving their communities & get to know the inner depths of their Tezkatlipokas. The 4 pillars of courses that Temachtiani Akaxe teaches that allow students to do this are Minnaliztli (archery), Yaotilliztli (ancestral warrior discipline), Tonalpohualli (study of the symbols, metalanguage & calendar system) & Mitotilliztli (danza Mazehual & huehuetl). There are also other courses that allow us to explore the different aspects of the ancestral knowledge that Akaxe was able to learn from his different teachers, elders & communities. (more on that in future posts) We have a grand vision to continue building so that we can dignify our ancestors, the knowledge & our own communities. It won't be an easy path but with the principles of our ancestral knowledge si se puede & we would love for you to join us on this path. ![]() From our IG / desde nuestro Instagram: We take our responsibility of being stewards & guardians of the ancestral knowledge very seriously. And we know in order to do this, we must have higher expectations of ourselves so that we may honor the legacy of our ancestors & dignify the knowledge they spent generations polishing… We are so aware of the potency of the ancient knowledge & practices that we feel strongly that we should engage with them the way our ancestors did: with gratitude, service, respect & discipline. This is why one of the keys to the work we do at Machtia Toltekatl & the classes that Temachtiani Akaxe teaches at Mahtinauhkalli is Self-Discipline. ![]() In many ceremonies we are given a small taste of these Four Flavors of Life as the Tlamakazke (or the one guiding the ritual) explains their symbolism as well as their meaning & importance in life. One time, during one of these rituals, a child was given the flavors to taste during a ceremony. Starting with the sour, then the bitter, then the salty & finally he would be given the sweet. The Tlamakazke explained that in life our experiences are usually one of these flavors, each holding a different lesson with it, & we should embrace each one & what it brings with it, we should be present & grateful for it, because it will soon be gone & thr cycles of life will bring us the next flavor. This child however, was so overwhelmed by the salty & bitter that he would not stop crying & refused to continue, & the poor thing never got to the sweet flavor of agave nectar that was waiting for him. This, our teacher & tlamakazke Akaxe explained, was a perfect lesson for us all, an opportunity to see the symbolism and our inner child reflected in this little mirror... Sometimes life brings us tough lessons, or sad & difficult moments that challenge us in many ways. And sometimes, instead of using the healthy coping |
