Hueytozoztli Ceremony ~ Wed May 15th in Little Village

5/1/2013

Hueytozoztli is one of the cycles of 20 days (or 20-day months) in the complex ancestral calendar system called the Tonalpohualli, which also included cycles of the Sun, the Moon, Venus and more.

The 20-day cycles, often called veintenas, were based on the cycles of the Earth and Nature. These ancient scientists observed the natural cycles of the plants, animals, insects, birds, and seasons and developed a system for humans to reflect in their behaviors, actions & thoughts what they observed to be in harmony with Nature.

This next veintena, Hueytozoztli, begins May 11th 2013. At this time, people begin a vegetarian diet, which was led into by the pescatarian diet of the last veintena, Tozoztontli. It is important to abstain from eating meat as a recognition that this is the moment in the cycle of Nature when the animals mate and reproduce, giving life to new generations of our animal brothers and sisters as well as to make an offering to all of

the forces of nature that are implied in nourishing and sustaining us all. This is also the time in which we begin to plant the seeds for this year’s crops and thus prepare center ourselves for this important work.

We will be holding a ceremony in the evening of the fifth day of Hueytozoztli, May 15th in Little Village to share this time and space in harmony and community with everyone who would like to join us. During this ceremony those who will...
be leading the planting of seeds or managing a garden are encouraged to bring seeds so that they may be activated during the ceremony. Those who are in charge of bringing the seeds of their garden to the ceremony are expected to fast for four days prior. Only seeds that have not yet been germinated are to be brought for the ceremony.  We will also have an offering of drumming, dance and songs.

Ceremony will be held at Gary Elementary's LVEJO Garden at 3740 W 31st St, Chicago, IL 60623. Cross Streets: Between S Ridgeway Ave and S Lawndale Ave ...  The ceremony will be outside so please dress according to the weather. All white attire with a red band across forehead and waist is recommended, please no feathers in accordance with the Mazehual tradition.

All are invited, feel free to bring your students, children, families and seeds. We look forward to sharing this time and space with you all!
